Interventions to assist libraries, archives and museums in documenting, preserving, digitising and promoting their heritage (both tangible and intangible) on a global scale, require efficient information management, which must be gradually entrusted to less skilled local providers. Whether for lack of time, developers, or money, most heritage programs outside of the core EU member states manage their information with plain documents, spreadsheets or small, poorly designed databases- if anything at all. To help them, we need to find ways not only to apply the best information management tools, but also to reduce unnecessary, duplicate efforts.
As a response to these challenges, we offer an open-source digital heritage service platform for resource-constrained environments - a tide which rises all ships. By combining available web-based software for archival description and collection documentation, electronic and mobile publishing, event management and CRM, together with a network of service providers offering local support, technical training and systems integration, we can pave the way to a sustainable information services ecosystem and an increasing self-reliance within resource-constrained environments.
